Seasoned NDC Cadre, 2ndDeputy Speaker of Parliament and Flagbearer Hopeful of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has proposed exemplary HIV/AIDS testing for candidates seeking to hold political offices including Flagbearer aspirants.
Though the public have considered this proposal, if accepted, a clear showing of “leadership by example” to get more people to know their status, some parliamentarians, political analysts and confidants of the Six-time Nadowli MP have suggested that the recommendation is a clear swipe at former President John Mahama.
It is claimed that, Hon. Bagbin’s working relationship with the former President may have availed him to some vital, confidential yet personal mysteries about Mr. Mahama, who coincidentally is in strong contention with Hon. Bagbin for the NDC flag-bearership slot.
They contend that the proposal is not only to lead the charge in whipping public interest towards testing but could well mean an extension of a challenge to former President Mahama to come clean on his HIV/AIDS status.
According to them, this issue about the former President’s status remained a closely guarded secret among top NDC guns and close affiliates until snippets of information about of his decision to lead the NDC again came up.
It is claimed that his wife, Mrs. Lordina Mahama’s strong disapproval of President Mahama’s intention to contest election again may be as a result of his health status. A condition they however accept is being properly managed by specialists from Dubai, UAE expensively.
Though HIV/AIDS can be managed with Anti-Retroviral Drugs, the contents of a flask he carries have remained a mysterious potion that curious Ghanaians have been expecting to know even when he was President.
The National Executive Council of the NDC is considering charging the Functional Executive Committee to include Hon. Bagbin’s proposal on the agenda of an emergency meeting likely to be scheduled in a fortnight.
Supporters of Former President Mahama have interpreted this as an attack on his person and have cited Hon. Bagbin’s remark as a smart attempt to abuse the privileged information he has on the former President and his family.
They say Hon. Bagbin’s likely inability to meet the new filing fee has influenced him to look for alternate means to make a case for the former President to rescind his decision to run.
By the foregoing, it is obvious the GHC420, 000 filing fee may not be the only requirement to guarantee qualification for the over nine prospective aspirants who are already on the campaign trail to become NDC’s flagbearer.
It is believed that former President, John Mahama knows his status very well, therefore enforcement of that proposal will have a huge bearing on decision to carry on in the race or decide to sit back and treat himself to some good, deserved rest.
